I make a faithful attempt to step outside the prejudice of looking at art from a singular point of view. In fact I respond more affirmatively when the creator hasn’t actively sought to paint to the judge.
A successful work of art transcends mere technical mastery when it makes its connection to the viewer. As juror, I strive to find those differences in the visual language that get me to that moment of understanding. The artists in this show do just that through a variety of technical, philosophical, and cultural approaches to the medium.
In my view, there is no right or wrong way to come to the problem of painting. There is each individual’s way, which gives birth to opportunity for a more dynamic collective presentation and is more accessible in a visually tangible way that cuts across styles, genres, or schools of thought. Being genuine in one’s approach makes for new ideas and modes of thinking and is ultimately more rewarding.
